Lana McDonald
President of the Alumni Association

Lana Derrick McDonald attended Northeastern College between 1964 and 1971, where the core principles of collaboration, self-improvement, and community would have been assimilated. These values were foundational to a remarkable and satisfying 40-year career as an educator that spanned primary, secondary, and tertiary levels and across two Caribbean territories: Trinidad and Tobago, and The Bahamas, fulfilling roles as classroom teacher, primary school mathematics curriculum facilitator, principal and lecturer.
She considers her most consequential work to have occurred during the 1980s and 1990s as a primary school mathematics curriculum facilitator. In this role, she was a contributor in introducing, driving and shaping a new wave of major reform in the teaching and learning of mathematics, a period she came to understand that as a "teacher you are a learner" and what it is to be "a lifelong learner".
Now retired, her dedication to Northeastern College remains vibrant. An active member of the revived NECAA, Lana stepped into the role of Alumni Association President in July 2024. She is passionately focused on strengthening the alumni network, fostering a sense of belonging, and building an enduring partnership with her alma mater to continue its tradition of excellence. For Lana, the Northeastern spirit is a gift to be passed on.
