The Story of the Northeastern College Alumni Association
The story of the Northeastern College Alumni Association (NECAA) is not one of uninterrupted operation, but of a persistent spirit—a flame that, though buffeted by the winds of time and circumstance, has been carefully rekindled by successive generations of dedicated alumni. It is a history defined not by its dormant periods, but by its powerful, celebratory returns.
The seed was planted in 1968, in the wake of the school’s own founding. The first President, Mr. Winston Cooper, provided the initial structure, diligently drawing up a Constitution to formalize the bond between the fledgling institution and its graduates. Yet, in those early decades, the Association’s rhythm was sporadic, its continuity challenged by the ebb and flow of alumni engagement, falling silent when meetings lapsed, only to be revived by a new wave of committed past students.
Despite this intermittent pulse, the profound connection to their alma mater consistently manifested in magnificent celebrations of legacy. The 25th Anniversary in 1986 stands as a testament to this. Spearheaded by then Vice-Principal Mr. Winston Williams, and ably assisted by Mr. Garth Maundy and Mr. Cecil Byron, the committee achieved something deeply symbolic: they brought home the founding Principal, Mr. Laltoo, from England to share in the milestone. It was a powerful act of reconnection with the school’s origins.
This tradition of honouring foundation continued. The 40th Anniversary in 2001, under the leadership of then Principal Mrs. Annette Brizan, saw Mr. Laltoo return once more, this time to launch his seminal history, "The Foundation Years," forever etching the school’s early struggles and triumphs into record. A decade later, the 50th Anniversary was proudly spearheaded by Principal Mr. Sieunarine, another chapter in a series of grand, defining reunions.
However, the modern, enduring incarnation of the Association began to take definitive shape in 2017. Moving beyond periodic celebration to sustained organization, alumni spearheaded by Mr. Dale Scobie formally established the Northeastern College Alumni Association (NECAA). This was no informal group; it was constituted, registered as a Non-Profit Organisation with the Companies Registry of Trinidad and Tobago, and committed to regular meetings and tangible cooperation with the school on various initiatives.
Yet, the path of a volunteer-led body is seldom smooth. The global pause of 2020-2023 brought activities to a near standstill. Notably, the 60th Anniversary passed without fanfare—a silent year amid the quiet. But the spirit, once again, proved resilient.
Now, in 2025, the NECAA is in a phase of purposeful rebuilding, "flying the plane while building it," as we work to solidify our administrative structure. Our immediate mission is clear: to honour our school’s 65th Anniversary not just with ceremony, but with action. We are rallying our vast community—over 30,000 graduands strong—to support the holistic development of Northeastern College. Our focus is on tangible projects: the repair and upgrade of the playing field and the auditorium, spaces vital for the social, cultural, and moral encouragement of current students.
From the foundational draft by Winston Cooper to the celebratory drives of Williams, Brizan, and Sieunarine, to the structured revival of today, the NECAA’s history is a cycle of re-engagement. It is a compelling reminder that our bond does not fade. We are the keepers of the flame, and today, we call upon every member of our extensive family. The legacy of Northeastern College was built by many; its future strength requires the support of us all. Join us as we build, repair, and celebrate, ensuring that this great institution thrives for generations to come.
